By the eleventh century a stone residential tower stood on the summit — a lord's house that was also a strongpoint — and the rock had become one of the border castles of the young Kingdom of Hungary, watching the roads towards Bohemia and Moravia. A market settlement grew below it; it is mentioned in writing in 1111 and again in 1113, and the castle itself appears in documents from 1193, spelled “de Trenchin”. Remember that those are facts about documents, not about when people arrived — both the settlement and the fort are older than the parchment that first names them. Trenčín became the seat of a county, a župa: the kingdom's basic unit of local government, run for the king by an official called a župan who collected his dues and led the county's men to war. For the next seven centuries, whoever held this rock ran the whole valley.V 11. storočí už stála na temene kamenná obytná veža — panské obydlie, ktoré bolo zároveň pevnôstkou — a skala sa stala jedným z pohraničných hradov mladého Uhorského kráľovstva; strážila cesty smerom do Čiech a na Moravu. Pod ňou vyrastala trhová osada: spomína sa v písomnostiach roku 1111 a znova 1113, samotný hrad sa v listinách objavuje od roku 1193 v podobe „de Trenchin“. Treba to čítať opatrne — sú to údaje o listinách, nie o tom, kedy sem ľudia prišli; osada aj hrad sú staršie než pergamen, ktorý ich prvýkrát pomenoval. Trenčín sa stal sídlom stolice, teda župy: základnej správnej jednotky kráľovstva, ktorú pre panovníka spravoval župan — vyberal kráľovské dávky a viedol mužov stolice do vojny. Nasledujúcich sedemsto rokov platilo: kto držal toto bralo, spravoval celé údolie.
