Through the eighteenth century the castle slowly stopped being needed. The Ottoman frontier had moved away, the uprisings were over, and its owners preferred comfortable houses down in the valley to a windy rock; the complex was kept up, but it was closer to a storehouse than a fortress. Then, in 1790, fire broke out in the town below, climbed the rock and took the castle with it. Roofs, ceilings and floors burned, and what was left was masonry standing open to the sky. Nobody rebuilt it — and the reason a visitor today walks through restored halls rather than original ones is that single fire.V priebehu 18. storočia hrad pomaly prestával byť potrebný.
