The manor at Strážky, then a separate village just south of the town, had belonged since 1556 to the Horváth-Stansith family, who ran a Latin humanist school there from 1584; it passed later to the Szirmays and then to the Mednyánszkys. Ladislav Mednyánszky, born in Beckov on 23 April 1852, was brought to Strážky as a boy and painted there for much of his life. In 1914, aged sixty-two, he volunteered as a war painter and went to the front. What he brought back is not heroic: exhausted men, the wounded, the dead. He died in Vienna on 17 April 1919, six months after the empire he had drawn.Kaštieľ v Strážkach, vtedy ešte samostatnej dedine južne od mesta, patril od roku 1556 rodine Horváth-Stansithovcov, ktorá tu od roku 1584 viedla latinskú humanistickú školu; neskôr prešiel na Szirmayovcov a potom na Medňanských.
