In 1772, during the First Partition of Poland, Austria took the pawned towns back and Spišská Belá returned to Hungarian administration. For the townspeople this meant new taxes, new courts and new officials, and before long the reforms of Maria Theresa and Joseph II: state-regulated schooling, a survey of who owned what, and limits on the powers landlords held over their subjects. A town that had spent three centuries on the seam between two kingdoms had to fit itself back into one.Roku 1772 pri prvom delení Poľska obsadilo Rakúsko zálohované mestá späť a Spišská Belá sa vrátila pod uhorskú správu. Pre mešťanov to znamenalo nové dane, nové súdy a nových úradníkov a onedlho aj reformy Márie Terézie a Jozefa II.: štátom riadené školstvo, súpis toho, kto čo vlastní, a obmedzenie moci zemepánov nad poddanými. Mesto, ktoré tri storočia žilo na švíku dvoch kráľovstiev, sa muselo znova vpratať do jedného.
