Building of the Vihorlat engineering works began on 1 May 1949 and production started on 15 July 1951. It did to Snina what Chemlon did to Humenné, only more so: a market town at the end of a branch line became a factory town, and the population climbed from 9,979 in 1970 to 13,347 in 1980 and 19,170 by 1991. Housing estates went up around the old centre to hold the new workers, and the last charcoal from the old ironworks valley had been burned in 1946 — one kind of industry ended and another began, five years apart.
