From 1918 Snina belonged to Czechoslovakia. The new state put its effort into schools, and literacy in these valleys rose faster in twenty years than it had in the previous hundred; that is genuinely the main thing the First Republic did for the far east. It did not make the district rich. In 1926 the Pčolinka river flooded and tore out the railway bridge — a reminder of how thin the connection to everywhere else really was.Od roku 1918 patrila Snina Československu. Nový štát vsadil na školy a gramotnosť v týchto dolinách stúpla za dvadsať rokov rýchlejšie než za predchádzajúcich sto — a to je naozaj to hlavné, čo prvá republika pre ďaleký východ urobila.
