Since 1996 Piešťany has been a district seat again, and it is still a working spa: the National Institute of Rheumatic Diseases is based here, and guests come for courses measured in weeks rather than nights, which is why more languages overlap in the park than a town of this size would otherwise explain. The old military airfield has found new uses — the Military History Museum moved there in 2004, and since the mid-2000s its aprons have carried summer music festivals. The town has hosted governments too: the prime ministers of the seventeen Central European Initiative countries in November 2005, and the presidents of the Visegrád Four in September 2008. On the island itself, buildings have been restored, closed and reopened at different speeds ever since 1989 — which is why it is safer to say what Piešťany is than to say what is open this week.Od roku 1996 sú Piešťany opäť okresným mestom a stále sú fungujúcimi kúpeľmi: sídli tu Národný ústav reumatických chorôb a hostia prichádzajú na kúry merané skôr na týždne než na noci — preto sa v parku prelína viac jazykov, než by človek od mesta tejto veľkosti čakal. Staré vojenské letisko našlo nové využitie: roku 2004 sa sem presťahovalo Vojenské historické múzeum a od polovice prvého desaťročia sa na jeho plochách konajú letné hudobné festivaly. Mesto hostilo aj vlády — v novembri 2005 premiérov sedemnástich krajín Stredoeurópskej iniciatívy a v septembri 2008 prezidentov krajín V4. Na samotnom ostrove sa budovy od roku 1989 obnovujú, zatvárajú a znova otvárajú rôznym tempom — a preto je bezpečnejšie povedať, čím Piešťany sú, než čo je otvorené práve tento týždeň.
