Two years before the catastrophe at Mohács, on 20 July 1524, King Louis II pledged Tematín and its market town of Piešťany to Alexej Thurzo for 25,000 gold pieces — the king needed money because of the Turkish danger, and the danger turned out to be real. Ottoman raiding parties reached and plundered Piešťany three times: in 1530, 1599 and 1663. The town had no walls and no castle of its own; its castle was an hour's hard climb away on the ridge, and it protected the lord and the ford rather than the people in the houses by the river. By 1610 almost every inhabitant of Piešťany was a Lutheran, a reminder that the Reformation swept through these villages in the same decades as the raids.Dva roky pred katastrofou pri Moháči, 20. júla 1524, dal kráľ Ľudovít II.
