The war stopped the guests and filled the bath houses with wounded soldiers and officers instead; a spa built around damaged joints and muscles turned out to be exactly what an army with shattered limbs needed. In February 1917 the new Thermia Palace hotel hosted a meeting of three rulers at once — Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, Emperor Karl I of Austria-Hungary and Tsar Ferdinand I of Bulgaria — who came here to agree how the war should be carried on. Within two years all three had lost their thrones, Austria-Hungary no longer existed, and Piešťany found itself in a country that had not been on the map when the three of them sat down to talk.Vojna zastavila príchod hostí a namiesto nich naplnila kúpeľné domy ranenými vojakmi a dôstojníkmi; kúpele postavené na chorých kĺboch a svaloch sa ukázali byť presne tým, čo armáda s dokaličenými končatinami potrebovala.
