The flood of 1813 was the worst of them all, and the rebuilding that followed is the beginning of the spa you can walk through today. Around 1820–1822 Count Jozef Erdődy put up the first masonry bath houses, in the plain classical style of the day; they were extended and rebuilt right through the century, and — a detail worth keeping — they were given the name Napoleon Baths only in 1923, so the famous name is a century younger than the buildings that carry it. Treatment was put on a proper medical footing by Dr F. E. Scherer, a lessee of the spa, who founded a military bathing institute here in 1863. From 1837 there is a record of the town's own oddity, the infanteristi — hand-pulled carts in which guests who could not walk were drawn about by men between the shafts, a kind of human taxi that survived here for over a hundred years. In 1848 the abolition of serfdom ended the Erdődys' lordship over the town; the spa stayed theirs.Povodeň roku 1813 bola zo všetkých najhoršia a obnova, ktorá po nej prišla, je začiatkom kúpeľov, akými sú dodnes. Okolo rokov 1820 – 1822 dal gróf Jozef Erdődy postaviť prvé murované kúpeľné domy v striedmom klasicistickom slohu; dostavovali a prestavovali sa počas celého storočia a — podrobnosť, ktorú stojí za to nezabudnúť — meno Napoleonské kúpele dostali až roku 1923, takže slávny názov je o storočie mladší než budovy, ktoré ho nesú.
