While raiders were burning the village, scholars across Europe were putting its springs into books. In 1545 Juraj Wernher, prefect of Šariš castle and a royal councillor, described them in his report on the remarkable waters of the kingdom of Hungary; the imperial physician Johann Crato of Krafftheim followed in 1571, Pope Sixtus V's own doctor Andrea Bacci in 1588, and the German traveller Martin Zeiller in 1632. In 1599 a bathing settlement beside the springs, called Teplice, is mentioned for the first time — an inn and a manor house for noble guests, standing on what is the historic centre of the town today. In 1642 Piešťany was granted the privileges of a market town and the right to hold fairs, and in the same year the Czech exile Adam Trajan of Benešov published a Latin poem in praise of the baths that carried their name far beyond the Váh. The reputation ran a long way ahead of the architecture: there was still almost nothing here to sleep in.Kým nájazdníci pálili dedinu, učenci po celej Európe zapisovali jej pramene do kníh.
