The Second World WarDruhá svetová vojna
PiešťanyPiešťany
When the Slovak National Uprising broke out, the air barracks at Piešťany did something almost no other unit in western Slovakia did: on the evening of 29 August 1944 their commander, Captain Ivan Haluzický, together with Lieutenant Július Drozd, ordered about 300 men to move to the insurgent territory in central Slovakia. They had to leave the aircraft standing on the field, and the Germans took them intact. On 18 September 1944 an eight-man raid by the 1st Czechoslovak Independent Fighter Air Regiment, flying in support of the Uprising, attacked the airfield and destroyed ten German aircraft on the ground. The front itself arrived in the spring: on 2 April 1945 retreating German troops blew up the middle spans, both piers and the shelter of the Colonnade Bridge, and damaged the Krajinský bridge as well; on 4 April 1945 Romanian and Soviet troops entered Piešťany. Samotný front prišiel na jar: 2. apríla 1945 ustupujúce nemecké vojská vyhodili do vzduchu stredné polia, oba piliere aj prístrešok Kolonádového mosta a poškodili aj Krajinský most; 4. apríla 1945 vstúpili do Piešťan rumunské a sovietske jednotky.
