On 4 January 1987 the winter stadium in Piešťany was hosting the last game of the world junior ice hockey championship, Canada against the Soviet Union. It turned into a mass brawl that spread over the whole ice surface and lasted twenty minutes; the organisers eventually switched the arena lights off, hoping the players would stop fighting in the dark. They did not, and both teams were thrown out of the tournament, which cost Canada a medal and possibly the gold. Nearly forty years later the hockey world still calls it the Punch-up in Piešťany — so for a great many people abroad, the name of this very quiet spa town is attached to the least restful twenty minutes in its history.Štvrtého januára 1987 sa na piešťanskom zimnom štadióne hral posledný zápas majstrovstiev sveta juniorov v hokeji, Kanada proti Sovietskemu zväzu. Zmenil sa na hromadnú bitku, ktorá sa rozliala po celej ploche a trvala dvadsať minút; organizátori napokon dali v hale zhasnúť v nádeji, že sa hráči prestanú biť potme. Neprestali a oba tímy z turnaja vylúčili, čo Kanadu stálo medailu a možno aj zlato. Takmer štyridsať rokov nato sa v hokejovom svete stále hovorí o bitke v Piešťanoch — takže pre množstvo ľudí v zahraničí je meno tohto veľmi pokojného kúpeľného mesta spojené s najmenej pokojnými dvadsiatimi minútami jeho dejín.
