The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, but it was centred on central Slovakia and never reached these hills; the east was freed by the front, not by the rising. The Soviet offensive out of the Carpathians took Uzhhorod on 27 October 1944 and then pushed west into the lowland. The Sobrance country was fought over at the end of that year, hard enough and long enough that most of the buildings in the town were destroyed or damaged. By late November 1944 the front had moved on past Michalovce and Humenné — both taken on 26 November — and this corner was behind Soviet lines, among the first parts of Slovakia to be out of the war.
