The families who settled these hills were Rusyns, and their Christianity was Eastern: Byzantine liturgy, icons instead of statues, married parish priests. On 24 April 1646, in the castle chapel at Uzhhorod — some forty kilometres east of here, and since 1945 in another country — sixty-three priests of this region accepted communion with Rome while keeping every one of those things. That is what Greek Catholic means: Catholic in obedience, Eastern in everything a visitor can actually see. Every wooden church raised here afterwards, this village's included, was built to that pattern — which is why it has an iconostasis and not an altar rail.
