Just before the First World War a sugar refinery was built at Trebišov — sources give 1910, the town's own history 1911–1912 — and an electric power station followed in 1911. Sugar beet suits the deep lowland soil, and a refinery is a strange kind of factory: it runs flat out for a few weeks in autumn and needs a whole countryside to feed it. For the next hundred years the beet campaign set the rhythm of the working year for the town and every village around it. It is the single reason Trebišov became an industrial place at all.Tesne pred prvou svetovou vojnou postavili v Trebišove cukrovar — pramene uvádzajú rok 1910, vlastné dejiny mesta roky 1911 – 1912 — a v roku 1911 pribudla elektráreň. Cukrová repa sa na hlbokej nížinnej pôde darí a cukrovar je zvláštna fabrika: pár týždňov na jeseň beží naplno a potrebuje na to celý kraj. Nasledujúcich sto rokov určovala repná kampaň rytmus pracovného roka mestu aj všetkým dedinám okolo. Je to jediný dôvod, prečo sa z Trebišova vôbec stalo priemyselné mesto.
