After the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács in 1526 the kingdom split three ways, and this lowland lay between the pieces. The Perényis strengthened Parič in 1536 and 1541 against the Ottoman threat, and in 1566 the castle held out against a raid by Crimean Tatars — allies of the sultan whose business was not conquest but carrying people off to be sold. The Ottomans themselves never held Trebišov. What the century actually did to this town was permanent fear and the cost of walls, not occupation, and the same is true of most of eastern Slovakia.Po zničení uhorského vojska pri Moháči v roku 1526 sa kráľovstvo rozpadlo na tri časti a táto nížina ležala medzi nimi. Perényiovci Parič v rokoch 1536 a 1541 posilnili proti osmanskej hrozbe a v roku 1566 hrad odolal vpádu krymských Tatárov — spojencov sultána, ktorým nešlo o dobývanie, ale o odvlečenie ľudí na predaj. Samotní Osmani Trebišov nikdy nedržali. Čo toto storočie mestu naozaj prinieslo, bol trvalý strach a náklady na hradby, nie okupácia — a platí to o väčšine východného Slovenska.
