The place appears in Latin documents as Terebus and Terebes, and the sources do not agree on when for the first time: Hungarian scholarship gives 1219, while the town's own history and Slovak reference works give 1254. Both are facts about surviving parchment rather than about when people arrived — the band of dry ground where the little Trnávka crosses the plain had been farmed long before any clerk wrote about it. Disagreements like this are ordinary in medieval Slovak history, because many charters survive only as later copies and a copy can carry the wrong year.
