Independent Slovakia inherited a district built on ore nobody wanted at the price it cost to dig. The mines closed, the state enterprises shrank, and the Spiš has lived with some of the highest unemployment in the country ever since — very unevenly, so that a village ten kilometres away can be far worse off than the town. Spišská Nová Ves itself rebuilt on engineering, electrical manufacturing and services, much of it supplying the car plants in the west, and on the summer traffic into the national park.
