The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Spišská Nová VesSpišská Nová Ves
In the spring of 1241 the Mongol army destroyed the Hungarian king's forces at Mohi and rode across the kingdom; the Spiš was emptied like everywhere east of the Danube. What matters for this town is what Béla IV did next. He invited German colonists — Saxons — into the depopulated Spiš with the right to settle, dig ore and govern themselves, and he ordered stone castles built where wooden forts had burned. The settlement that grew out of that invitation is this town: it was not destroyed by the Mongols, it exists because of what they forced a king to do.Na jar roku 1241 rozdrvilo mongolské vojsko pri Mohi sily uhorského kráľa a prehnalo sa krajinou; Spiš sa vyľudnil ako všetko na východ od Dunaja.
