The railway up the Hornád valley opened in 1871 and made this the transport centre of the Spiš — which is largely why it, and not Levoča, is the biggest town in the region today. Ore, timber and iron could now leave by the wagonload, and factories followed the line. A nineteenth-century town's fortunes very often came down to one thing: whether the rails went through it or past it. Levoča desať kilometrov na sever dostala len vedľajšiu trať a pomaly prestala byť hlavným mestom čohokoľvek.
