The Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944 and German troops occupied the country to put it down. The Spiš was not one of its strongholds, but the gorges and forests of what is now the Slovak Paradise, a few kilometres west of the town, sheltered partisan groups through the autumn and winter. Most of the Spiš Germans — families who had been here for seven centuries — were evacuated by the German authorities ahead of the front, and those who came back afterwards were expelled under the post-war decrees. Soviet troops took Spišská Nová Ves on 27 January 1945.Slovenské národné povstanie vypuklo 29. augusta 1944 a nemecké vojská obsadili krajinu, aby ho potlačili.
