The revolution of 1848 abolished serfdom across the kingdom, which changed the villages around the town far more than the town itself. The war that followed reached the Spiš in the winter of 1848–49, when Hungarian and imperial armies manoeuvred through these valleys; Slovak accounts record the town being shelled by imperial artillery in 1849, with the parish church among the buildings hit. When it was over, the old privileges of towns like this one — their own courts, their separate legal standing — were finished.
