The oldest surviving mention is in a charter of 1268 naming the plebanus de Villa Nova — the parish priest of the New Village. That is a fact about a piece of parchment, not about a founding: the Saxons were already here, with a priest and therefore a church. Villa Nova is Latin for new village; the Germans said Neudorf, the Hungarians Igló, and Slovak kept the Latin meaning as Nová Ves.
