In independent Slovakia the town has been shrinking: about 4,600 people at the census of 2001, 3,586 at the census of 2021, with some of the highest long-term unemployment in the country. Since 2022, when Russia's full-scale invasion turned the Slovak–Ukrainian border into a supply route, the yard has had a different kind of work — grain coming out of Ukraine, aid and equipment going in, all of it still changing gauge here. The town is a terminus: nothing passes through it on the way to somewhere else, and whoever comes is coming here. Od roku 2022, keď sa slovensko-ukrajinská hranica po ruskej invázii zmenila na zásobovaciu trasu, má prekladisko inú prácu — obilie ide z Ukrajiny von, pomoc a technika dnu, a všetko to tu stále mení rozchod. Mesto je konečná: neprechádza ním nik na cestu inam, kto sem príde, ide práve sem. Či nová práca vydrží, si v Čiernej netrúfa predpovedať nikto.
