For most of its history there was no settlement here with a name of its own. In the 1790s a Hungarian geographer described the place as a puszta — an outlying stretch of grazing and hayfield belonging to a village somewhere else, in this case to Ágcsernyő, the village Slovaks call Čierna. The date usually given as the first written mention of the name is 1828. As late as the census of 1910 the place was still counted as part of that village: a few farm buildings, cattle, and a great deal of standing water.Väčšinu svojich dejín tu nijaká osada s vlastným menom nestála. V deväťdesiatych rokoch 18. storočia opísal uhorský geograf toto miesto ako pustatinu — odľahlý pás pasienkov a lúk, ktorý patril k dedine ležiacej inde, v tomto prípade k Ágcsernyő, teda k dnešnej Čiernej. Ako rok prvej písomnej zmienky sa zvyčajne uvádza 1828. Ešte pri sčítaní v roku 1910 sa toto miesto rátalo k spomínanej dedine: zopár hospodárskych budov, dobytok a veľa stojatej vody.
