The valley of the Morava has been a road for as long as goods have moved across Europe. The long-distance route between the Adriatic and the Baltic — the one later called the Amber Road — ran up this side of the Little Carpathians, past the spot where Malacky now stands, and the Roman frontier lay a day's walk south on the Danube. This was the barbarian bank, and nobody built a town on it: the ground is poor sand and what grows on it best is pine.
