Malacky lies in the Záhorie Lowland about 35 kilometres north of Bratislava, on the flat sandy ground between the western foot of the Little Carpathians and the Morava river, which here forms the Austrian border. Pine plantations on old dunes cover much of the country around the town, and a large military training area occupies part of it.Malacky ležia v Záhorskej nížine asi 35 kilometrov severne od Bratislavy, na rovnej piesočnatej pôde medzi západným úpätím Malých Karpát a riekou Moravou, ktorá tu tvorí rakúsku hranicu. The storyHistória

Malacky grew on the road running north from Pressburg towards Moravia. In the seventeenth century the Pálffy family, who held the estates on both sides of this end of the ridge, made it their seat here: they built the manor house, laid out the park, and founded the Franciscan monastery in the middle of the century.Malacky vyrástli pri ceste vedúcej z Prešporka na sever na Moravu. Into the monastery church they built a Scala Sancta — a copy of the Holy Stairs of Rome, a flight of steps climbed on the knees, with relics set beneath the treads. Very few such stairs exist in this part of Europe, and the Malacky one has drawn pilgrims for more than three centuries.Do kláštorného kostola vstavali Scala Sancta — Sväté schody podľa rímskeho vzoru, po ktorých sa stúpa po kolenách a pod ktorých stupňami sú uložené relikvie. The railway and, later, the main road to Brno turned the town into a transport place; a military airfield was built in the interwar and post-war years at nearby Kuchyňa, under the hills, and is still an air-force base. Since the 1990s the motorway and an industrial park have tied Malacky firmly into Bratislava's economic orbit.Železnica a neskôr hlavná cesta na Brno urobili z mesta dopravné miesto; v medzivojnových a povojnových rokoch vzniklo pri neďalekej Kuchyni pod kopcami vojenské letisko, ktoré dodnes slúži letectvu. The Franciscan church and monastery is the thing to see: a plain white seventeenth-century front, the Holy Stairs inside, and the Pálffy burial crypt beneath. It is a working religious house as well as a monument, so times for the stairs and the crypt vary — check before you come.Františkánsky kostol s kláštorom je tým hlavným: strohé biele priečelie zo 17. storočia, vnútri Sväté schody a pod nimi pálfiovská hrobka. The Pálffy manor house stands in a public park at the edge of the centre. It served for much of the twentieth century as a hospital and has been restored only in part, which is visible; the park around it is the town's green space and is used as such.Pálfiovský kaštieľ stojí vo verejnom parku na okraji centra. Veľkú časť 20. storočia slúžil ako nemocnica a obnovený je len sčasti, čo je na ňom vidieť; park okolo neho je mestskou zeleňou a tak sa aj používa.

Two excursions start from the town. North-east under the ridge stands the ruin of Plavecký hrad, a frontier castle above the village of Plavecké Podhradie, reached on foot from below. West, the floodplain meadows of the Morava — protected wetland, and for forty years the closed border zone — now carry a cycle route along the river.Z mesta vedú dva výlety. Na severovýchod pod hrebeňom stojí zrúcanina Plaveckého hradu, pohraničného hradu nad obcou Plavecké Podhradie, ku ktorému sa vystúpi zdola pešo. Na západ sa tiahnu lužné lúky Moravy — chránená mokraď a štyridsať rokov uzavreté hraničné pásmo — kadiaľ dnes popri rieke vedie cyklotrasa.

Work and industryPráca a priemysel

The industrial park on the edge of town brought manufacturing and engineering, and the motorway brought warehousing; between them they are the town's main private employers. The air base at Kuchyňa, forestry on the sands and the cement works at Rohožník under the ridge add the rest.Priemyselný park na okraji mesta priniesol výrobu a strojárstvo, diaľnica sklady; spolu tvoria hlavných súkromných zamestnávateľov mesta. Under the flat fields south of the town lies something less visible: depleted gas deposits at Láb, converted into one of Central Europe's larger underground gas storage sites, which is why pipeline installations turn up in the middle of the Záhorie plain.Pod rovnými poľami južne od mesta leží niečo menej viditeľné: vyťažené ložiská plynu pri Lábe, premenené na jeden z väčších podzemných zásobníkov plynu v strednej Európe — preto sa uprostred záhorskej roviny objavujú plynárenské zariadenia.

Malacky is on the electrified main line from Bratislava to Kúty and on towards Brno and Prague, with frequent regional trains, and the motorway runs past the town; buses serve the surrounding villages and Bratislava.Malacky ležia na elektrifikovanej hlavnej trati z Bratislavy do Kútov a ďalej na Brno a Prahu, s častými regionálnymi vlakmi, a popri meste vedie diaľnica; autobusy obsluhujú okolité obce a Bratislavu.
