In 1622 the emperor Ferdinand II handed the Plavecký estate to Pavol Pálffy, and the family then did the thing that decided the town's future: instead of living in a cold castle on a rock, they settled at Malacky beside the road, built a Renaissance manor house and put the estate offices next to it. In 1653 they finished a monastery and church here and gave it to the Franciscan order. Into the church went a Scala Sancta — a copy of the Holy Stairs of Rome, a flight of steps that pilgrims climb on their knees, with relics set beneath the treads. Very few of these exist in this part of Europe, and they are the reason a small Záhorie town has been a place of pilgrimage for more than three hundred years.V roku 1622 dal cisár Ferdinand II. Plavecké panstvo Pavlovi Pálfimu a rod potom urobil vec, ktorá rozhodla o budúcnosti mesta: namiesto studeného hradu na skale sa usadil v Malackách pri ceste, postavil si renesančný kaštieľ a vedľa neho úrady panstva. V roku 1653 tu dokončili kláštor s kostolom a darovali ho františkánom. Do kostola vstavali Scala Sancta — kópiu rímskych Svätých schodov, po ktorých pútnici vystupujú po kolenách a pod ktorých stupňami sú uložené relikvie. V tejto časti Európy sú také schody vzácnosťou a práve vďaka nim je malé záhorské mesto už vyše tristo rokov pútnickým miestom.
