People in Slovakia often say of a ruin that "the Turks destroyed it". Plavecký hrad shows how often that is wrong: it was imperial troops who wrecked it in 1706, while putting down the Hungarian uprising of Francis II Rákóczi, and nobody ever rebuilt it. From then on the estate was run entirely from Malacky — which is why the town, and not the castle, has the manor, the park and the offices. A census in 1787 counted 2,152 people here in 231 houses, most of them farmers, and the town's own history records French troops plundering Malacky in 1810, at the end of the occupation that followed Napoleon's war against Austria.Na Slovensku sa o zrúcaninách často hovorí, že „ich zničili Turci“.
