The Little Carpathians rise out of the plain just beyond Bratislava's last streets and run north-east in a single wooded wave. Along their sunny south-eastern foot lies a chain of towns that all grew on the same thing: Svätý Jur, Pezinok and Modra were wine towns before they were anything else, and all three won their way out of noble lordship to the status of free royal town in the seventeenth century — Modra in 1607, the other two in 1647.Malé Karpaty sa dvíhajú z roviny hneď za poslednými ulicami Bratislavy a tiahnu sa na severovýchod v jedinej zalesnenej vlne. The shape they share is a long street of burgher houses with a gateway through to a yard, a press-house at the back and the vines beginning where the gardens end. What separates them is scale and second trade. Svätý Jur is the smallest and the least altered, with stone-walled vineyard terraces above it; Pezinok is the district town, with a castle, a museum and a mining past in the hills behind; Modra added a craft, and has been painting its yellow-and-blue majolika for well over a century.Spoločný majú pôdorys: dlhá ulica meštianskych domov, prejazd do dvora, vzadu lisovňa a vinice začínajúce sa tam, kde sa končia záhrady. West of the ridge the landscape changes completely. Záhorie is flat, sandy country of pine plantations and market gardens, closed on its far side by the Morava river and the Austrian border beyond it. Malacky and Stupava both belonged for centuries to the Pálffys, who built a manor house in each, and both now sit on the busy corridor of road and railway that runs north from Bratislava towards Moravia.Západne od hrebeňa sa krajina úplne mení. Záhorie je rovinatý piesočnatý kraj borovicových lesov a záhradkárskych polí, na druhej strane uzavretý riekou Moravou a rakúskou hranicou za ňou. Malacky aj Stupava patrili po stáročia Pálfiovcom, ktorí si v oboch postavili kaštieľ, a obe dnes ležia na rušnom koridore cesty a železnice smerujúcom z Bratislavy na Moravu.
East of the capital there are no hills at all. Senec stands on the warm, dry floor of the Danubian Lowland, where gravel pits filled with groundwater and turned into the busiest bathing lakes in western Slovakia. The same flat ground and the motorway beside it made the town the centre of Slovakia's densest belt of warehouses — a summer resort and a logistics park sharing one address.Východne od hlavného mesta už kopce nie sú. Outside Bratislava itself the region has only three districts — Malacky, Pezinok and Senec — and every town on this page lies within an hour of the capital, most of them within half of one. That closeness is the region's defining fact. It fills the trains each morning, it has pushed new housing into villages that were farming settlements a generation ago, and it means a vineyard, a swamp forest and a castle ruin are all day trips rather than expeditions.Mimo samotnej Bratislavy má kraj len tri okresy — Malacky, Pezinok a Senec — a každé mesto na tejto stránke leží do hodiny cesty od hlavného mesta, väčšina do polhodiny.
