The mines were finally shut in 1888. A mining village whose mine closes usually empties, and many people here did leave — for timber work, for the towns, and, with hundreds of thousands of others from these mountains, for America. But the women of Špania Dolina had made bobbin lace for sale for generations, and now that became the household income rather than a sideline. A school of bobbin lace opened in the village in 1883, five years before the last shift.
