Everything in this village was made by copper. The terraces the houses stand on are mine spoil, the church sits on a rock above the workings, and the tower in the middle exists to wake people for a shift. For three centuries the ore under these slopes was rich enough for bankers in Augsburg to buy into it. When it ran out the village did not empty — it turned to lace.Všetko v tejto obci urobila meď.

Mining tools dug out of the ground here have been dated to roughly 2000–1700 BC, and there is evidence of copper being taken from these slopes even earlier, in the late Stone Age. That is not a small thing. Copper mixed with tin makes bronze, the metal that gave a whole age its name, and a place where copper ore came close to the surface was worth walking a long way to reach. Nobody wrote any of this down; we know it because the tools and the diggings survived. The valley was being worked three thousand years before it had a name we can read.
When the Kingdom of Hungary took shape, these mountains were royal forest — hunting ground and timber, administered from Zvolen, with almost nobody living in them. The start of mining in the medieval sense is usually put at the eleventh or twelfth century, which means people were coming back to ore their distant ancestors had abandoned. There is no charter to prove it and no village yet, only workings in the hillside. What matters is the pattern that begins here: the ore is the only reason anyone lives in this valley, and it decides everything that follows. Listina to nedokazuje a obec ešte nejestvuje, len diela vo svahu.
The Mongol army swept through the kingdom in 1241, and nothing here is recorded as having been destroyed — this was forest, with little to burn and few people to kill. What the invasion changed was royal policy. King Béla IV set about building stone castles and inviting settlers, hospites or guests, from German-speaking lands, and among them came miners who understood ore. The mining towns of central Slovakia are the result. The valley itself first appears in writing in 1254 — a fact about a document, not about when people arrived.
The place is called Montana in 1263 and Grueb, “the pit”, in 1458. Two languages were being spoken here and each named the valley its own way. The Slovak name says who owned it: Špania Dolina is the valley of the špán, the lord, and the German miners called it Herrengrund, which means exactly the same thing. The ore was worked by families from Banská Bystrica, a free mining town with royal privileges since 1255, ten kilometres down the valley. A village of miners with two names and one employer: that is the shape of the place for the next five hundred years.V roku 1263 sa dolina volá Montana, v roku 1458 Grueb, teda „jama“. Slovenský názov prezrádza, komu patrila: Špania Dolina je dolinou špána, teda pána, a nemeckí baníci ju volali Herrengrund, čo znamená presne to isté. Banícka obec s dvoma menami a jedným zamestnávateľom — taká zostane nasledujúcich päťsto rokov.
By the late 1400s the easy ore near the surface was gone and the deep workings were filling with water. Ján Thurzo, who had learned water-lifting engineering abroad, joined forces with the Augsburg banking family of the Fuggers and formed a company run from Banská Bystrica. In 1494 he began sinking a shaft here of a new type — the main shaft, later called the Ferdinand shaft, which eventually reached 250 metres. Money and machinery from Germany, ore from this valley: historians call it one of the first multinational companies, and it made the copper of Špania Dolina a name in Kraków, Antwerp and Venice.
The company paid well for a while and then stopped paying well, and in 1525 the miners of the Banská Bystrica district rose in revolt. It ran on into 1526 and it failed; the men who led it were punished and the mines went back to work. In 1546 the Thurzo–Fugger venture ended and the mines passed to the Habsburg crown, which ran them through its own mining office for the next three centuries. The German form Herrengrundt is written down in 1535. From now on a miner's employer is the state, and a strike is not a wage dispute but a matter for the king's officials.
The seventeenth century was the worst time this valley had. The long run of anti-Habsburg uprisings marched armies up and down these valleys and mining stopped whenever they came, and the miners themselves struck or revolted again and again — 1609, 1610, 1626, 1632, 1638, 1640, 1646 and 1673 are all recorded. The klopačka in the middle of the village belongs to this world: a tower with a wooden board that was struck to call the shifts, so that everybody started and stopped together. Most sources put it in the seventeenth century, some a hundred years earlier. Even so, by the end of the century around 800 people worked here.Sedemnáste storočie bolo pre túto dolinu najťažšie. Dlhý rad protihabsburských povstaní hnal týmito dolinami vojská hore-dole a baníctvo pri každom ich príchode zastalo, a sami baníci sa búrili a štrajkovali znova a znova — zaznamenané sú roky 1609, 1610, 1626, 1632, 1638, 1640, 1646 a 1673. Do tohto sveta patrí klopačka uprostred obce: veža s drevenou doskou, do ktorej sa klopalo na zvolávanie šichty, aby všetci začínali a končili naraz. Väčšina prameňov ju kladie do 17. storočia, niektoré o sto rokov skôr. Napriek všetkému tu ku koncu storočia pracovalo okolo 800 ľudí.
Keeping deep mines dry needs power, and power meant water. A system of collecting, feeding and connecting channels about 36 kilometres long was built from the fifteenth century onwards and worked into the twentieth, bringing water along the hillsides from distant valleys to drive the pumps and hoists. New shafts went down in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries — Maximilián, Mária, and the deepest of them, Ludovika, at 440 metres. It was superb engineering aimed at a shrinking prize: by the second half of the eighteenth century the ore was largely worked out, and everything after that is a long ending.
The mines were finally shut in 1888. A mining village whose mine closes usually empties, and many people here did leave — for timber work, for the towns, and, with hundreds of thousands of others from these mountains, for America. But the women of Špania Dolina had made bobbin lace for sale for generations, and now that became the household income rather than a sideline. A school of bobbin lace opened in the village in 1883, five years before the last shift. It is an unusual ending for a mining place: the men's work stopped and the women's work kept the village alive.Bane napokon v roku 1888 zatvorili.
Czechoslovakia was declared in 1918 and this valley joined it with nothing left to mine. The water system that had run the pumps for four centuries went out of use around the turn of the century, and the village lived on wood, on smallholdings, on lace and on money sent home from abroad. Houses built for shift workers were now simply houses. It is worth noticing what did not happen: the place was not abandoned and not rebuilt. That is the only reason there is still a whole miners' village standing here to look at.Roku 1918 vzniklo Československo a táto dolina doň vstúpila bez toho, aby v nej ostalo čo ťažiť.
The Slovak State proclaimed in March 1939 was a client of Nazi Germany. On 29 August 1944 the Slovak National Uprising broke out with its capital at Banská Bystrica, ten kilometres down this valley, and for two months the insurgents held much of central Slovakia. Banská Bystrica fell on 27 October and the insurgent army withdrew north past the mouth of this valley, through Staré Hory and Donovaly into the mountains, to fight on as partisans through the winter. German anti-partisan units followed them in: in March 1945 the village of Kalište, in the same mountains north-east of the city, was burned out and never rebuilt.Slovenský štát vyhlásený v marci 1939 bol klientom nacistického Nemecka. 29. augusta 1944 vypuklo Slovenské národné povstanie so strediskom v Banskej Bystrici, desať kilometrov nižšie v tejto doline, a povstalci dva mesiace držali veľkú časť stredného Slovenska. Banská Bystrica padla 27. októbra a povstalecká armáda ustupovala na sever popri ústí tejto doliny cez Staré Hory a Donovaly do hôr, aby bojovala ďalej partizánsky celú zimu.
The communist state went back to the rock. Building of an ore-processing plant began in 1957, a tunnel through to the old Piesky workings was finished in 1961, and the plant opened in 1964. It did not restore the valley's fortune, and mining is not what saved the village. In 1979 the old core was declared a protected reserve of folk architecture, and around 85 miners' houses are listed monuments today. What is being preserved here is not a castle or a great church but the ordinary housing of working people, which is far rarer to find still standing. Doline to bohatstvo nevrátilo a nebolo to baníctvo, čo obec zachránilo.
At the end of 2025 the village had 237 inhabitants, and a good many of the houses belong to people from Banská Bystrica who come at weekends. Visitors come for the covered stairway, the church on its rock, the klopačka and the marked mining trail up the valley, where mine water still runs out of the hillside. The lace is still made here, by women of the village, for the village. The old workings are not a show mine and are not made safe — this is a steep inhabited place with narrow lanes, not an attraction with a ticket office.
