Almost every great Slovak castle stands on a rock. This one does not, and that is the whole story: an Angevin king had it built on flat ground beside his market town as a comfortable hunting seat, and the wars of the next two centuries had to be fitted around a house that was never designed to fight.

The Mongol invasionVpád Mongolov
Before this castle there was another one, high on the steep rock between the Slatina and the Hron — today it is called Pustý hrad, the Deserted Castle. It was the seat of the Zvolen comitatus, a royal district that reached far up into the mountains. When the Mongol army swept through Hungary in 1241, Béla IV's answer across the whole kingdom was stone instead of timber, and the hill castle above Zvolen was enlarged into one of the largest castle sites in the country. But it was a long, steep climb from the town below, and that single inconvenience is why a later king came down off the rock and built on the flat.Ešte pred týmto hradom stál nad Zvolenom iný — vysoko na strmom brale medzi Slatinou a Hronom, dnes mu hovoríme Pustý hrad.
Between 1360 and 1382 King Louis I the Great — an Angevin, and from 1370 king of Poland as well — had a new castle raised at the edge of the town. His family had come north from Naples two generations earlier, and what they built here follows the Italian urban castello: a compact rectangle of four wings around an arcaded courtyard, with the towers worked into the plan rather than stuck on outside. It was not a frontier fortress and was never meant to be one. It was a hunting seat, put exactly where the king wanted to hunt, at the mouth of the forests climbing toward Poľana. Under today's courtyard archaeologists later found the foundations of an older church, so the ground was not empty when the masons arrived.V rokoch 1360 – 1382 dal kráľ Ľudovít I. Veľký — Anjouovec a od roku 1370 aj poľský kráľ — postaviť na okraji mesta nový hrad. Nebola to pohraničná pevnosť a ani ňou nikdy nemala byť. Bolo to poľovnícke sídlo postavené presne tam, kde chcel kráľ poľovať — pri ústí lesov stúpajúcich k Poľane. Pod dnešným nádvorím neskôr archeológovia našli základy staršieho kostola, takže miesto nebolo prázdne, keď naň prišli kamenári.
The castle was finished in 1382, and it was finished for an occasion: the betrothal of Louis's daughter Mary to Sigismund of Luxembourg was settled here, and the wedding itself is placed at Zvolen in 1385. Sigismund was about seventeen. He went on to rule for half a century as king of Hungary, king of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor, and he came back to Zvolen again and again — this was a house he liked. In 1424 he settled the castle estates of Zvolen county on his second wife, Barbara of Cilli, as her dower: the property whose income paid for a queen's household. Zvolen, Ľupča, Vígľaš, Dobrá Niva and Šášov were all on that one list.Hrad dokončili v roku 1382 — a dokončili ho na príležitosť: dohodli tu zásnuby Ľudovítovej dcéry Márie so Žigmundom Luxemburským a samotnú svadbu kladú pramene do Zvolena v roku 1385. Žigmund mal vtedy asi sedemnásť rokov. Vládol potom pol storočia ako uhorský kráľ, český kráľ i rímsky cisár a do Zvolena sa vracal znova a znova — tento dom mal rád. V roku 1424 zapísal hradné panstvá Zvolenskej stolice svojej druhej manželke Barbore Celjskej ako veno, teda majetok, z ktorého žil kráľovnin dvor. Na tom jedinom zozname boli Zvolen, Ľupča, Vígľaš, Dobrá Niva aj Šášov.
From 1440 to 1462 the castle was one of the seats of Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, the Czech commander who held most of what is now central and eastern Slovakia for the child-king Ladislaus. The old hill castle above the town did not survive those wars: in 1451 it burned during fighting between Jiskra's soldiers, who were quartered there, and the army of John Hunyadi. Nobody rebuilt it, and that is how it came by the name Deserted Castle. Down on the flat the new castle was untouched. Matthias Corvinus came here often to hunt, and after his death in 1490 his widow Beatrice of Naples kept it as her residence.V rokoch 1440 – 1462 patril hrad medzi sídla Jána Jiskru z Brandýsa, českého vojvodcu, ktorý pre maloletého kráľa Ladislava držal väčšinu dnešného stredného a východného Slovenska.
After the Hungarian army was destroyed at Mohács in 1526 the Ottoman frontier came to within roughly fifty kilometres of Zvolen, and a comfortable hunting palace suddenly sat astride the road to the silver and gold of the central Slovak mining towns. Around 1500 the Thurzó family had already thrown an outer ring of walls around it with four round bastions and a gatehouse. In 1548 Italian masters added a whole extra storey pierced with loopholes and set the corner turrets in place — that crenellated Renaissance parapet running right round the roofline is what you recognise the castle by from a passing train. An artillery bastion followed around 1590, and from 1575 a permanent garrison under the county's lord lieutenant lived inside the walls. Turzovci už okolo roku 1500 stihli obohnať hrad vonkajším opevnením so štyrmi okrúhlymi baštami a vstupnou bránou. V roku 1548 talianski majstri nadstavili celé poschodie so strieľňami a osadili nárožné arkierové vežičky — práve toto renesančné atikové cimburie obieha celú strechu a podľa neho hrad spoznáte aj z idúceho vlaku. Okolo roku 1590 pribudol delostrelecký bastión a od roku 1575 tu sídlila stála vojenská posádka pod velením zvolenských županov.
Look up in the great hall and you are looking at the year 1712. The painted wooden coffered ceiling is divided into 78 panels of Roman kings and Habsburg emperors, laid out in chronological order and ending with Charles VI — a very deliberate statement by the castle's owners about the line of authority they placed themselves under. The ceiling was moved into the hall when the room was rebuilt in 1784, the same campaign that gave the late-Gothic castle chapel its Baroque interior. Two centuries of taste stacked in one room is the normal condition of almost every old building in this country. Do dvorany strop preniesli pri jej prestavbe v roku 1784, teda v tej istej etape, keď neskorogotická hradná kaplnka dostala barokový interiér. Dve storočia vkusu naskladané v jednej miestnosti sú bežný stav takmer každej starej stavby u nás.
When the Slovak National Uprising broke out on 29 August 1944, Zvolen was one of its main centres, and the castle was put to work: it served as the headquarters of the 2nd Czechoslovak Partisan Brigade and as a hospital for the wounded. A few hundred metres away the town's railway workshops were welding armoured trains out of ordinary boiler plate — the Štefánik between 4 and 18 September, the Hurban finished on 25 September. German troops broke the centre of the Uprising on 27 October 1944 and the fighters went into the mountains. Zvolen was taken by Soviet and Romanian troops on 14 March 1945. The armoured train standing in the park below the castle today is a replica, built in 1974 as a film prop. československej partizánskej brigády a zároveň v ňom ležali ranení. Pár sto metrov ďalej zvárali zvolenské železničné dielne z obyčajného kotlového plechu pancierové vlaky — Štefánik medzi 4. a 18. septembrom, Hurban dokončili 25. septembra. Nemecké vojská rozbili centrum Povstania 27. októbra 1944 a bojovníci odišli do hôr. Zvolen obsadili sovietske a rumunské jednotky 14. marca 1945.
The castle was declared a national cultural monument on 27 February 1961, and a full restoration followed — designed by the architect Karol Chudomelka in 1964 and carried out in 1969. It was during those works that the older church was found under the courtyard. What moved in afterwards is why the visit takes a couple of hours rather than twenty minutes: a permanent collection of the Slovak National Gallery, with a lapidarium of Gothic stone carving on the ground floor and old European painting above it. And from 1974 the arcaded courtyard has been a stage — the Zvolen Castle Games, a theatre and opera festival, have been held here every summer since.Hrad vyhlásili za národnú kultúrnu pamiatku 27. februára 1961 a nasledovala celková pamiatková obnova — projekt architekta Karola Chudomelku z roku 1964, realizácia v roku 1969.
Slovakia has more than a hundred castles and the great majority of them are ruins. This one is roofed, furnished, heated and in daily use: gallery rooms upstairs, an exhibition on the history of Zvolen run by the Forestry and Wood Museum on the top floor, services and concerts in the chapel, weddings in the knights' hall, a café in the courtyard. The reason is simple and slightly unromantic. A building that people keep using is a building whose roof keeps getting mended.
