1440 – 1462, and after 1490 Jiskra's men, and the end of the old castleJiskrovi vojaci a koniec starého hradu

From 1440 to 1462 the castle was one of the seats of Ján Jiskra of Brandýs, the Czech commander who held most of what is now central and eastern Slovakia for the child-king Ladislaus. The old hill castle above the town did not survive those wars: in 1451 it burned during fighting between Jiskra's soldiers, who were quartered there, and the army of John Hunyadi. Nobody rebuilt it, and that is how it came by the name Deserted Castle. Down on the flat the new castle was untouched. Matthias Corvinus came here often to hunt, and after his death in 1490 his widow Beatrice of Naples kept it as her residence.V rokoch 1440 – 1462 patril hrad medzi sídla Jána Jiskru z Brandýsa, českého vojvodcu, ktorý pre maloletého kráľa Ladislava držal väčšinu dnešného stredného a východného Slovenska. Starý hrad na kopci tie vojny neprežil: v roku 1451 zhorel počas bojov medzi Jiskrovými vojakmi, ktorí na ňom sídlili, a vojskom Jána Huňadyho. Nikto ho už neobnovil — a tak si vyslúžil meno Pustý hrad. Dolu na rovine zostal nový hrad nedotknutý. Často sem chodil na poľovačky Matej Korvín a po jeho smrti v roku 1490 tu sídlila jeho vdova Beatrix Aragónska.
