You do not climb to Zvolen Castle. You walk to it. The town’s long square runs out at its upper end and the castle simply stands there on the flat: a squared block with corner towers and that saw-toothed Renaissance attic running right round the top, battlements half fortification and half ornament. Pass under the gate and the building turns itself inside out. The outer face is a defensive wall; the inner face is an arcade with a gallery above it running round a square courtyard, arch after arch, with nothing above it but a square of sky. The Italian idea is there in a single view.Na Zvolenský zámok sa nestúpa. Prichádza sa k nemu. Upstairs the rooms are furnished and hung. The King’s Hall keeps a painted coffered ceiling of imperial portraits — panel after panel of Roman emperors, seventeenth-century work, looking down from the beams. Off the wings opens the late-Gothic castle chapel, given a Baroque re-dressing in a later century. The rest is gallery: rooms of old European painting and sculpture, and — the part most visitors remember — Gothic panel paintings and carved altar figures gathered in from churches across the region. From the upper windows you look out over the roofs of Zvolen to the wooded hills, and on one of them, right across the town, the huge broken outline of Pustý hrad.Na poschodí sú miestnosti zariadené a ovešané obrazmi. Kráľovská sieň si drží maľovaný kazetový strop s panovníckymi portrétmi — kazeta za kazetou s rímskymi cisármi, práca zo sedemnásteho storočia, hľadiaca dolu z trámov. Z krídel sa vchádza do neskorogotickej zámockej kaplnky, ktorá dostala v neskoršom storočí barokový šat. Zvyšok je galéria: sály starého európskeho maliarstva a sochárstva a — to, čo si väčšina návštevníkov zapamätá najviac — gotické tabuľové maľby a rezbárske oltárne figúry, znesené sem z kostolov celého kraja. Z horných okien dovidíte ponad strechy Zvolena na zalesnené kopce a na jednom z nich, priamo naproti cez mesto, na obrovský rozbitý obrys Pustého hradu.
