Zvolen sits where the Slatina runs into the Hron, at the road and rail crossroads of central Slovakia, which makes it an unusually good base. One enormous ruin lies inside the town itself; three more castles are within an easy drive, up the Hron and out to the east.Zvolen leží tam, kde sa Slatina vlieva do Hrona, na cestnej a železničnej križovatke stredného Slovenska — a preto je nezvyčajne dobrým východiskom. Pustý hrad
The counterweight to the furnished castle down in the town, and the reason to give Zvolen a whole day. On a wooded hill on the other side of the river junction — between the Hron and the Slatina — lies one of the largest medieval castle sites in Slovakia by area: a whole hilltop of walls, towers and cisterns, ruined for centuries and uncovered slowly by an excavation that has run for decades. Vígľaš
The other royal hunting castle of this basin — the pair makes sense only when you see both. Vígľaš burnt in 1945 and stood gutted for decades; it was rebuilt in this century and stands under Poľana again.Druhý kráľovský poľovnícky hrad tejto kotliny — dvojica dáva zmysel, až keď uvidíte oba.
