Almost every great castle in Slovakia stands on a rock. Zvolen Castle does not — in the last third of the fourteenth century King Louis I the Great had it built on the flat ground at the edge of his market town: an Italian palace of four wings around an arcaded courtyard, raised as a royal hunting seat for the forests of the Hron valley and Poľana. Roofed, furnished and hung with paintings, it is a museum castle today, not a ruin.Takmer každý veľký slovenský hrad stojí na skale.
