The Castle That Came Down from the RockZámok, ktorý zostúpil zo skaly

Almost every great castle in Slovakia stands on a rock. Zvolen Castle does not — in the last third of the fourteenth century King Louis I the Great had it built on the flat ground at the edge of his market town: an Italian palace of four wings around an arcaded courtyard, raised as a royal hunting seat for the forests of the Hron valley and Poľana. Roofed, furnished and hung with paintings, it is a museum castle today, not a ruin.Takmer každý veľký slovenský hrad stojí na skale. Zvolenský zámok nie — v poslednej tretine štrnásteho storočia ho dal kráľ Ľudovít Veľký postaviť na rovine na okraji svojho mesta: taliansky palác so štyrmi krídlami okolo arkádového nádvoria, ako kráľovské poľovnícke sídlo pre lesy Pohronia a Poľany. Zastrešený, zariadený a ovešaný obrazmi je dnes zámkom-múzeom, nie zrúcaninou.
