The single most photographed thing here, and the reason the castle looks like nowhere else in Slovakia: an arcade at ground level with a railed gallery on carved stone consoles above it, and the whole plan visible at once from the middle of the court. The crenellated parapet that crowns the whole block replaced the medieval roofline when Zvolen was rebuilt against the Ottoman advance — and it is what makes the castle recognisable from a passing train.Skôr než vojdete, poodstúpte cez námestie. The King’s HallKráľovská sieň

The hall’s coffered ceiling is filled with painted panels of Roman emperors, row upon row of them — a seventeenth-century statement about where the owners of this house thought they stood in history.Zdvihnite hlavu — a nechajte ju hore. This is what fills the castle: a permanent collection of the Slovak National Gallery — old European painting and sculpture, and a body of Gothic panel painting and altar carving that would justify the trip on its own.
