Before this castle there was another one, high on the steep rock between the Slatina and the Hron — today it is called Pustý hrad, the Deserted Castle. It was the seat of the Zvolen comitatus, a royal district that reached far up into the mountains. When the Mongol army swept through Hungary in 1241, Béla IV's answer across the whole kingdom was stone instead of timber, and the hill castle above Zvolen was enlarged into one of the largest castle sites in the country. But it was a long, steep climb from the town below, and that single inconvenience is why a later king came down off the rock and built on the flat.Ešte pred týmto hradom stál nad Zvolenom iný — vysoko na strmom brale medzi Slatinou a Hronom, dnes mu hovoríme Pustý hrad.
