There is no dragon here, and no bride walled into the masonry. The story Zvolen actually has is a truer one, and it begins with the man who paid for the place. Louis I, called the Great, ruled a realm that reached from the Adriatic coast of Dalmatia to the Carpathians, and from 1370 he wore the Polish crown as well. His family, the Angevins, had come north from Naples a generation or two before him and never entirely stopped being Italian: they brought Italian craftsmen, Italian taste, and the idea that a royal house ought to be a designed thing rather than a heap of walls following the shape of a rock.Nie je tu drak ani nevesta zamurovaná do múru. And the hunt was not a hobby. A medieval royal court travelled; the king governed from wherever he happened to be, and the hunting season moved the whole apparatus — household, chancery, guests, envoys — out into the forests for weeks at a time. The Zvolen basin was among the finest hunting country in the kingdom: deep beech and fir climbing toward Poľana, with game enough for the kind of hunt that was also a diplomatic occasion. What the king needed there was not a fortress but a comfortable, defensible, handsome house large enough to hold a court. That is exactly what he got — and exactly what still stands.A poľovačka nebola koníček. Stredoveký kráľovský dvor cestoval; panovník vládol odtiaľ, kde sa práve nachádzal, a poľovnícka sezóna presunula celý aparát — dvor, kanceláriu, hostí, vyslancov — na celé týždne von do lesov. Zvolenská kotlina patrila k najlepším loviskám kráľovstva: hlboké bučiny a jedliny stúpajúce k Poľane a zveri dosť na poľovačku, ktorá bola zároveň diplomatickou udalosťou. Kráľ tam nepotreboval pevnosť, ale pohodlný, brániteľný a reprezentatívny dom dosť veľký na to, aby pojal dvor. Presne to dostal — a presne to tam dodnes stojí.
