The oldest traces of people here came out of the travertine quarries: finds from the Palaeolithic, the Old Stone Age. That is not an accident of where anyone happened to dig. Warm mineral springs and soft, workable stone are exactly what draws people to a place and keeps them there, and the quarrymen cutting travertine for building were cutting straight through the record of everybody who had come before them.Najstaršie stopy po ľuďoch tu vyšli najavo v travertínových lomoch: nálezy zo staršej doby kamennej. Nie je to náhoda toho, kde sa práve kopalo. Teplé minerálne pramene a mäkký, opracovateľný kameň sú presne to, čo ľudí na miesto priťahuje a udrží ich tam, a lamači, ktorí travertín ťažili na stavby, prekopávali priamo záznam o všetkých, čo tu boli pred nimi.
