The First World WarPrvá svetová vojna
HumennéHumenné
Humenné stands at the bottom of the road to the Carpathian passes, and in the winter of 1914–15 that road became a front line. Russian armies pushed over the ridges to the north and east, and the fighting swung back and forth along the crest for months in deep snow; both sides lost men in numbers that are hard to picture, as much to cold and disease as to bullets. The military cemeteries in the villages around the town date from this war or from the next one over the same ground. Nothing about the town's position had changed since the thirteenth century — which is exactly why the war arrived here.
