In 1684 the male line of the Drugeths died out, and after three and a half centuries somebody else had to inherit upper Zemplín. The estate passed through the Zichy and Althan families and, by the nineteenth century, to the Csákys and the Andrássys. The same decade finished the castles: in the anti-Habsburg uprisings that filled the end of the century, Brekov — the family's rock down the valley — was wrecked and never rebuilt. From then on this corner of the kingdom was governed from a comfortable house in a town rather than from a fortress on a crag, which tells you the wars had moved somewhere else.Roku 1684 vymrela mužská vetva Drugetovcov a po tri a pol storočí musel horný Zemplín zdediť niekto iný. Panstvo prešlo cez Zičiovcov a Althanovcov a v devätnástom storočí ku Čákiovcom a Andrášiovcom. To isté desaťročie znamenalo koniec hradov: v protihabsburských povstaniach, ktoré vypĺňali sklonok storočia, Brekov — rodové bralo nižšie v doline — dolámali a nikto ho už neobnovil. Odvtedy sa tento kút kráľovstva spravoval z pohodlného domu v meste, nie z pevnosti na skale, a to samo osebe hovorí, že vojny sa presunuli inam.
