Humenné first appears in a written document in 1317. In the same years King Charles Robert of Anjou, who had spent a decade fighting the great lords of eastern Hungary for his own crown, handed the estates of upper Zemplín to the men who had backed him — the Drugeths, a family from the Kingdom of Naples. They ran this corner of the kingdom from 1317 until 1684: three hundred and sixty-seven years, first from the castle rock at Brekov down the valley, later from the town itself. Remember what a first written mention actually is, though — it is a fact about a piece of parchment, not about when people arrived. There were farms in this basin long before anybody thought to write the name of the place.Humenné sa v písomnom dokumente prvý raz objavuje v roku 1317. V tých istých rokoch odovzdal kráľ Karol Róbert z Anjou — ktorý si desaťročie vybojúval korunu proti mocným pánom východného Uhorska — panstvá horného Zemplína tým, čo stáli pri ňom: Drugetovcom, rodu z Neapolského kráľovstva. Tento kút kráľovstva spravovali od roku 1317 do roku 1684, teda tristošesťdesiatsedem rokov — najprv z hradného brala v Brekove nižšie v doline, neskôr priamo z mesta. Treba však vedieť, čo prvá písomná zmienka vlastne je: je to údaj o pergamene, nie o tom, kedy sem prišli ľudia. V tejto kotline gazdovali dávno predtým, než niekomu napadlo meno obce zapísať.
