Zemplín and Ung were the heartland of the risings against the Habsburgs: the kuruc insurgents of Imre Thököly in the 1680s, then the long war led by Francis II Rákóczi from 1703 to 1711. Armies marched through repeatedly, requisitioning as they went, and epidemics followed them. Kapušany lost a large part of its population and its craft guilds disappeared altogether, though the town was never completely emptied. A guild took a generation to build and a single bad decade to destroy, which is why the eighteenth century here starts poorer than the sixteenth ended.Zemplín a Užská stolica boli srdcom povstaní proti Habsburgovcom: kuruci Imricha Thökölyho v osemdesiatych rokoch 17. storočia a potom dlhá vojna Františka II. Rákócziho v rokoch 1703 – 1711. Vojská tadiaľto prechádzali znova a znova, rekvirovali, čo našli, a za nimi chodili epidémie. Kapušany stratili veľkú časť obyvateľov a ich remeselnícke cechy zanikli úplne, hoci mestečko sa nikdy celkom nevyľudnilo. Cech sa buduje generáciu a zničiť ho vie jediné zlé desaťročie — preto sa tu 18. storočie začína chudobnejšie, než sa skončilo to šestnáste.
