After 1989 the border with Hungary, a few kilometres south, softened and then effectively vanished when both countries joined the European Union in 2004 and the Schengen area in 2007; families and markets divided for seventy years could meet again. The border a few kilometres east did the opposite: it became the external frontier of the Union. At the same time the state farms and cooperatives that had employed almost everybody were broken up, and the work did not come back. Hranica pár kilometrov na východ urobila pravý opak: stala sa vonkajšou hranicou Únie. V tom istom čase sa rozpadli štátne majetky a družstvá, ktoré zamestnávali takmer všetkých, a tá práca sa už nevrátila. Mesto môže byť slobodnejšie a chudobnejšie zároveň — a presne to sa tu stalo.
