In the early fifteenth century the Pálóczi family took over the town and, with the king's permission, put up a fortification on the hill above it. What exactly they built is still argued about: some historians think it was a proper small castle, others a fortified noble residence. In the same century the place was raised to the rank of a market town — allowed to hold fairs and a weekly market, but with no walls, and with townspeople who were still their lord's subjects. Its own seal with the town arms survives from this period, which is the medieval equivalent of a certificate of standing.Začiatkom 15. storočia získal mestečko rod Pálóczi a s kráľovým súhlasom postavil na kopci nad ním opevnenie.
