The First World War took men out of Dobšiná into the Austro-Hungarian army, as it did from every town in the kingdom, and it took some of them for good. In 1934, sixteen years after the fighting stopped, a monument to the fallen was unveiled in the park beside the square. That gap is worth thinking about: a war memorial goes up when a community has both the money and the distance to build one, and in a mining town in the 1930s neither came quickly. The men listed on it went to war as subjects of Austria-Hungary and were commemorated as citizens of Czechoslovakia — the state had changed underneath them.Prvá svetová vojna odviedla dobšinských mužov do rakúsko-uhorskej armády tak ako z každého mesta v kráľovstve — a niektorých odviedla natrvalo. Roku 1934, šestnásť rokov po tom, čo boje utíchli, odhalili v parku pri námestí pomník padlým. Nad tým odstupom sa oplatí zamyslieť: pomník padlým vzniká vtedy, keď má spoločenstvo peniaze aj odstup, a v baníckom meste 30. rokov neprišlo ani jedno rýchlo. Muži na ňom zapísaní odišli do vojny ako poddaní Rakúsko-Uhorska a pripomínali si ich ako občanov Československa — štát sa pod nimi vymenil.
