On 15 June 1870 the royal mining engineer Eugen Ruffínyi, with Gustáv Lang and Andrej Mega, climbed down an ice-filled shaft in the hills north of the town and reached the chambers below. What they found is a cave shaped to trap cold air and hold it: a floor of ice more than twenty metres thick, with frozen columns and falls along the walls. It was open to visitors within a year, in 1871, and in 1887 it became the first cave in Europe lit by electricity — remarkable when you consider how new electric light itself was. From 1893 people skated on the ice floor in summer, which tells you exactly how nineteenth-century tourism thought about a natural wonder.15. júna 1870 zliezol kráľovský banský radca Eugen Ruffínyi s Gustávom Langom a Andrejom Megom do ľadom vyplnenej priepasti v kopcoch severne od mesta a dostal sa do siení pod ňou.
